چکیده

The equilibrium shape and density distribution of rotating fluids under self-gravitation is a classical problem in mathematical physics. Early efforts before the twentieth century revealed ellipsoidal solutions with constant density. In the twentieth century, major progress was made by studying steady rotating solutions to the compressible Euler-Poisson equations. Assuming a polytropic equation of state p = ρ, a variational method, pioneered by the work of Auchmuty and Beals, proves existence of solutions if γ > 4 3 . On the other hand, we present in this talk a perturbative method that establishes a continuous set of solutions for γ > 5 . This method opens up new ways to prove existence results for the Vlasov-Poisson equations and for magnetic stars, together with global continuation to large rotation speed. This talk should be accessible to .

Pulsating red giant and supergiant stars in the Local Group dwarf galaxy Andromeda I

We have conducted an optical long-term monitoring survey of the majority of dwarf galaxies in the Local Group, with the Isaac Newton Telescope (INT), to identify the long period variable (LPV) stars. LPV stars vary on timescales of months to years, and reach the largest amplitudes of their brightness variations at optical wavelengths, due to the changing temperature. They trace stellar populati...

Massive galaxies in the young Universe, ten billion years ago, formed stars at surprising intensities1, 2. Although this is commonly attributed to violent mergers, the properties of many of these galaxies are incompatible with such events, showing gas-rich, clumpy, extended rotating disks not dominated by spheroids1, 2, 3, 4, 5. Cosmological simulations6 and clustering theory6, 7 are used to ex...

A search for counter-rotating stars in S0 galaxies

We have obtained high signal-to-noise spectra along the major axes of 28 S0 galaxies in order to search for the presence of disk stars on retrograde orbits. Full line-of-sight velocity distributions were extracted from the data, and the velocity distributions were modelled as arising from the superposition of populations of stars on prograde and retrograde orbits. We find no new cases in which ...

Populating Stellar Orbits inside a Rotating, Gaseous Bar

In an effort to better understand the formation and evolution of barred galaxies, we have examined the properties of equatorial orbits in the effective potential of one specific model of a rapidly rotating, steady-state gas-dynamical bar that has been constructed via a self-consistent hydrodynamical simulation. At a given value of the Jacobi constant, roughly half of all test particles (stars) ...

Nonlinear Dynamical Stability of Newtonian Rotating White Dwarfs and Supermassive Stars

We prove general nonlinear stability and existence theorems for rotating star solutions which are axi-symmetric steady-state solutions of the compressible isentropic EulerPoisson equations in 3 spatial dimensions. We apply our results to rotating and nonrotating white dwarf, and rotating high density supermassive (extreme relativistic) stars, stars which are in convective equilibrium and have u...
